Serve as a Poll Worker in Georgia

Help ensure Georgia voters successfully cast ballots in November

Posted July 28, 2020

Background & Context

*You must be a resident of Georgia to volunteer for this opportunity*

During the June 9 primary election, too many Georgia voters could not exercise their right to vote without having to overcome unacceptable barriers in the way. One reason for this breakdown was Georgia simply did not have enough poll workers to run an effective election.

Immediate Problem

Large numbers of poll workers dropped out due to the risk of contracting COVID-19, poll worker recruitment efforts were hard to find, and some Georgians who asked to serve as poll workers did not receive any response. Many of those remaining poll workers were also insufficiently trained, leading to the chaos of long lines, inoperable voting machines, and misinformation regarding absentee and provisional ballots.

As we look towards the November 3 general election, we must come together and address the poll-worker shortage in Georgia to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to cast a ballot. To that end, the ACLU of Georgia has developed a poll worker recruitment program, and we encourage all civic-minded individuals to join their neighbors and answer the call.

Work & Deliverables

We are especially recruiting lawyers who will be committed to understanding the ins and outs of election law/administration, younger Georgians at lower risk of COVID-19 complications, and tech-savvy Georgians who can help keep the machines running.

As a Georgia lawyer who knows how to accurately interpret statutes, regulations, and rules, if you serve as a poll worker you can help quell any confusion around Georgia election law and ensure that voters can successfully cast their ballots at their polling locations. We will follow up will all volunteers to help you sign up, train, and get scheduled with your county of residence to work the polls in Georgia.
