COVID Aid question + Immigration status

Advice that we would be able to share with our community.

Posted April 27, 2020

Background & Context

IDA has been doing seminars for documentary filmmakers and journalists - https://www.documentary.org/creators/covid19. A question that keeps coming up is that immigrants are wary of applying for relief because they could be marked a "public charge" and impact either their green card or citizenship applications. Would this be the case if immigrants apply for SBA loans or unemployment during this crisis?

Immediate Problem

We have been providing detailed information on how to apply for aid under the SBA Payroll Protection Program - over 2600people attended our online seminars and we have published detailed FAQs here: https://www.documentary.org/creators/covid19

Work & Deliverables

Give advice on whether accepting loans under the SBA PPP programs would affect an immigrant's application for a green card or citizenship. would they be considered a public charge?
