Plain Language Bylaws

Creating bylaws, policies and procedures in plain language to be accessible and that don't feed into the typical power structures

Posted November 11, 2020

Background & Context

We have been working with Drake Law School and their legal clinic, which I'm grateful for, but when asked about plain language bylaws the student's response is, "it needs to be the way it is (legal speak) because that is what the world expects." We don't want to have position of power or officers - but we also see the reason for a lead signature, note taker for meetings and someone to be a fiscal signature. Just don't want the titles.

Immediate Problem

It will help create a document that others can use in the future as we hope to be a model for other states, groups to use to be transparent. Again we are working Drake Law School but need a progressive thinking lawyer to maybe assist in this matter.

Work & Deliverables

Example of plain language legal bylaws (and other procedural documents as we evolve).

Iowa Disability League

We, several individuals with disabilities, began organizing after Medicaid in Iowa became privatized in 2016 and it has turned into a disability justice movement. The intent of the Iowa Disability League is to become a virtual, accessible, inclusive communication hub for the disability community and partners to learn about and respect each of our identities, become empowered voices, and work toward systems change which allows individuals to pursue the life they chose with liberty and the ability to pursue happiness.
