Conduct State-Level Policy Research on Non-carceral Response to Domestic Violence
With the help of your research we will be able to create a first of it's kind Survivor Wealth Policy Map that will be used to engage survivors in the policy making process.

Background & Context
About:
FreeFrom is on a mission to create pathways to financial security and long-term safety for survivors of domestic violence so they can thrive and live free from abuse. One of our approaches to this work is promoting the passage of policies across the U.S. that support survivors in building wealth. This year, FreeFrom will launch the first-of-its-kind Survivor Wealth Policy Map, an interactive tech tool that will provide accessible information to users about how each state does (or does not) currently support survivors in building wealth, how each state can improve, and quick and easy ways for users to get involved in the policy advocacy process.
Our goals for the Survivor Wealth Policy Map are to 1) advance survivor wealth-centered policies in every state and 2) engage and empower survivors to actively participate in the policy-making process.
Project Description:
We have nearly finished 8 of the 9 policy categories for each State + DC. We recently expanded the category list to include non-carceral response to domestic violence (ex. does a state require mandatory arrest domestic violence in cases?). We are currently looking for volunteers to help with state-by-state legal research on state-level policies related to non-carceral responses to domestic violence. Research for each state should take about 1-2 hours and we hope to have the completed research by early October 2020.
With the help of your legal research, our Survivor Wealth Policy Map will make unprecedented strides in advancing policies to support survivors across the country while simultaneously (and for the first time ever) engaging survivors and advocates in the policy-making process!
Immediate Problem
Survivors are kept out of the policy making process. In order to ensure systems and policies are survivor-centered, survivors must be at the forefront of policy advocacy and decision making. However, we must first create a policy landscape of survivor-wealth state-level policies that impact survivors to understand the current landscape.
Work & Deliverables
Volunteers will complete research for assigned state(s) answering the questions listed in the research guide and template.
