Defense against the dark arts online: research online voter suppression
Help us develop strategies to combat voter suppression, the relevant content policies of social media companies, and current non-profit & government efforts to mitigate the threat
Posted March 17, 2020
The Voter Protection Corps is a national voter protection effort led by experienced voter protection attorneys that conducts targeted voter protection operations in key states across the country in advance of the 2020 election. The organization’s mission is to ensure that every qualified voter can register to vote, vote easily, and have valid votes count.
We are seeking several lawyers to research publicly available information and synthesize such research on the state of play for online voter suppression. In this context, we define voter suppression as online messages about the voting process designed to keep people from voting. There are three categories of messages: deception about how or when to vote (i.e., lying about the time, place, and manner of voting), calls to boycott an election, and attempts to threaten or intimidate potential voters.
Each lawyer will research and write a short summary of an area related to this topic. Research topics include: (1) what voter suppression has occurred in recent US election cycles and what was the response of relevant actors, (2) what are the policies of relevant social media companies related to posting and take down of election disinformation (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.), (3) what are the current non-profit and government efforts to mitigate the threat (including any efforts to monitor and take down this content), and (4) what are policy and action-oriented recommendations from experts who have studied this space to mitigate the threat of online voter suppression.
