Shape Employee Policies for DC Human Rights and Technology Non-profit
Our employees work tirelessly to foster technology that fights online censorship for millions of people globally. Help us craft policies that honor our employee's and our organization's values.
Posted February 20, 2020
Having previously operated as a program within a larger organization, OTF recently became its own standalone 501(c)(3). We use government funds to incubate technologies that fight online censorship and other repressive practices world-wide. As a newly founded organization, with a small, diverse workforce of human rights defenders and technologists, we want to create employee policies that reflect our values and are compliant with relevant laws.
We have drafted an Employee Handbook and other internal policies. The volunteer will conduct a review/audit of our handbook and provide feedback and guidance for areas of change or improvement. The volunteer should be a DC-licensed attorney with experience in this area who can balance the interests of the organization with the interests of our people.
The project will begin the week of March 2nd with a completion date of March 20th. The volunteer will liaise with OTF's General Counsel on this project.
Transparency is one of our core values and, with your help, we would like to craft policies that we are proud of and that can become a model for our community.
Preparation Phase
- Intro call with OTF's GC, including discussion of specific areas of concern
Collaboration Phase
- Review of existing Handbook and initial feedback
- Discussion of areas of improvement
- Deliver proposed revisions
Wrap Up
- Finalize revisions

OTF supports open technologies and communities that increase free expression, circumvent censorship, and obstruct repressive surveillance as a way to promote human rights and open societies. We support research, development, and implementation programs focused on increasing: * Access to the internet, including tools to circumvent website blocks, connection blackouts, and widespread censorship; * Awareness of access, privacy, or security threats and protective measures, including how-to guides, instructional apps, data collection platforms, and other efforts that increase the efficacy of internet freedom tools; * Privacy enhancement, including the ability to be free from repressive observation and the option to be anonymous when accessing the internet; and * Security from danger or threat when accessing the internet, including encryption tools.
