Detention Project Volunteer (min 3 hours a week)
Help connect incarcerated trans people with vital legal information and resources they otherwise struggle to access.

The Detention Project works to end the abuses transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people experience in prisons and jails across the country. Detention Project volunteers respond to letters sent by trans and gender nonconforming people in prisons and jails requesting legal information and resources and draft case summaries for incarcerated trans people to help us connect them with attorneys that can represent them. This is a remote position open to anyone regardless of legal experience; minimum time commitment is approximately 3 hours a week. Template letters and extensive volunteer guides are provided, and TLC staff review and provide feedback on every draft response.
Preparation Phase
- Intro call with project manager
- You review the training materials
- You sign a volunteer agreement
Collaboration Phase
- Project manager assigns you a new letter
- You read through the letter and our guiding notes
- You use the templates provided to create a draft response
- You review the available resources to identify useful attachments
- You fill out a web form to create a record of the inquiry
- Project manager reviews your draft response and gives feedback
- You make any necessary edits and upload a final version
- We mail out the final letter for you, and you're done!
Wrap Up
- Volunteers can wrap up their contract at any time by contacting the project manager
