Support survivors of domestic violence in their divorce and custody proceedings

Posted May 16, 2025

Background & Context

Asian Women's Shelter works with survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and other forms of gender-based violence. Many of the survivors we work with have multiple ongoing court proceedings including divorce, custody, criminal, and immigration. While resources exist for helping survivors get a restraining order and navigate their immigration cases, survivors do not always get proper legal support for navigating their divorce and custody cases.

Immediate Problem

Support survivors navigate their divorce and custody cases.

Asian Women's Shelter

Asian Women's Shelter was founded in 1988 to help the most vulnerable survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking gain access to the support services they deserve. Although we serve all survivors, we have the cultural and language expertise to address the needs of Asian and Arab immigrant, refugee, limited-English proficient, and LGBTQ+ survivors of gender-based violence. Our services include an emergency shelter, multilingual crisis line, transitional housing, comprehensive case management, anti-trafficking programming, and community specific programs including Arab Women's Services and Queer Asian and Transgender Support services. We also provide primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention programming. Our mission is to eliminate domestic violence by promoting the social, political, and economic self-determination of women and all survivors of violence and oppression. All of our services are culturally-specific, available in more than 40 languages, survivor-centered, and trauma-informed.
