Fraud Recovery and Cybersecurity Legal Support for Cambio Labs

Securing legal recourse to recover lost funds and save our nonprofit

Posted February 28, 2025

Background & Context

Cambio Labs is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing entrepreneurship education and resources to underserved communities. In November 2024, our organization became the victim of a sophisticated cyber fraud scheme that led to significant financial losses and operational disruptions.

The incident began with a phishing attack that compromised a team member’s email, allowing bad actors to initiate unauthorized financial transactions. Shortly after, fraudulent credits and subsequent disputes resulted in a $30,000 negative balance in our account. Despite our immediate response—engaging cybersecurity professionals, disputing transactions with our bank and payment processors, and reporting the crime to the FBI—we have faced challenges in recovering the stolen funds.

Adding to the complexity, Chase Bank and Stripe have cited policies that limit our ability to reverse the fraudulent transactions, shifting responsibility between financial institutions and leaving us with limited recourse. Despite documented evidence of unauthorized access and missing transaction records, we are being held accountable for debts we did not incur.

This situation threatens our ability to operate and support the communities we serve. We urgently need legal assistance to navigate financial recovery, dispute processes, and cybersecurity protections to prevent future incidents. Your expertise will help us reclaim lost resources, strengthen our security policies, and ensure the stability of our mission-driven work.

Immediate Problem

Cambio Labs urgently needs legal support to recover $30,000 in fraudulent charges that resulted from a cyberattack. Despite clear evidence of unauthorized transactions, Chase Bank and Stripe are holding us responsible for the disputed amounts, citing internal policies that prevent reversal.
This issue is time-sensitive, as failure to recover the funds threatens our operational stability and ability to serve our community. Thank you in advance.
