Raids Response Preparation
File a Motion to Reopen an immigrant’s final order of removal (or similar appeal/challenge to final orders)
Posted July 10, 2019
News of the impending mass arrests of families and the exposure of children to terrible conditions at the border is nothing short of devastating. The Trump administration has threatened large-scale interior enforcement actions meant to arrest, detain, and deport mothers, fathers, and children.
It is almost certain that the government will try to rush families through to deportation as quickly as possible. Without access to their files, without a chance to talk to a lawyer, without due process. We need attorneys willing to assert the individual rights of these people to a fair and just legal process.
We anticipate a need for volunteer attorneys who are able and willing to file a motion to reopen for on behalf of an immigrant, or immigrant family, picked up and detained in these raids. The work will entail drafting and filing a motion to reopen or an appeal and working with your client to prepare supporting documents. Depending on the case, it may also involve representing your client on the merits of a successful reopened case.
Your work will be supported by several innovative resources: (1) an online library of highly curated training materials as well as other helpful resources (e.g., case exemplars, sample briefs); (2) an in-house removal defense expert to answer questions; and (3) regularly scheduled weekly office hours.
