Defend Virginia Voters' Rights at the Ballot Box

Directly assist Virginia voters by answering questions, solving problems, and reporting issues

Posted November 3, 2023

Background & Context

The history of slavery and Jim Crow is woven throughout modern-day Virginia. From the strictest felony disenfranchisement laws in the nation to just recently being the second hardest state to vote in in the United States. While we tear down the barriers in laws, there remain outdated practices and norms, supplemented by bad-faith actors, that want to restrict the rights of Virginians to vote. Our volunteers are the first line of defense against those who seek to tear down democracy in the Commonwealth.

Work & Deliverables

Virginia Election Protection volunteers serve on the front lines of defending democracy by directly assisting voters, answering questions about the voting process and voting rights, and reporting problems to the statewide command center.

Virginia Civic Engagement Table

VCET was founded in 2008 and has been quietly doing the work behind the scenes helping our partners get stronger, talk to more voters year-round, and work together to make the systemic changes Virginia needs. We’re proud to be doing the work to support and build Virginia’s progressive community. We envision a multi-racial democracy in Virginia where the full diversity of the commonwealth is actively participating, representing, and transforming our democracy. Where white supremacy is being actively dismantled, people of color, working families, and impacted communities are thriving in a just economy and leading healthy lives. We work towards our vision by cultivating diverse progressive leadership, driving collaboration through equitable and inclusive relationships, moving collective action in the progressive movement, and growing shared capacity and resources for the progressive movement infrastructure.
