Help investigative journalism nonprofit give international grants

Support high-impact investigative journalism

Posted April 26, 2023

Work & Deliverables

Our organization, Flashlight, gives grants to freelance investigative journalists. To date, we've given to only US-based journalists. We are receiving a lot of amazing applications from journalists based outside the United States, and we'd like to explore how we could best support them.

Flashlight

Flashlight is a network of giving circles supporting investigative journalists. In a Flashlight giving circle, members pool money and distribute grants to investigative journalists. Everything at Flashlight centers around community — members select grantees, follow along with their reporting, and have fun along the way. Investigative journalism is an engine of progress — shedding light on important issues and holding centralized authorities to account. Stories and scoops that capture public attention are necessary fuel for change. But investigative journalism is chronically underfunded. It’s a costly, time-intensive pursuit, and the prevalent media business models aren’t equipped to support it. As a result, many important stories are never told. At Flashlight, we aim to help change that.
