Urgent Call: Lawyers Needed to Serve Over 400 New Detainees

Posted February 19, 2019

This month, the government abruptly sent hundreds of asylum seekers, including individuals who traveled with the caravan, to the Denver Contract Detention Facility. The facility, located near Denver, is now filled to capacity, and most of the asylum seekers there have no attorneys to help them demonstrate that they fear return to their countries of origin.

Our local partner, the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network, is working around the clock to respond, but needs extra hands on deck. Your help is needed now to prepare these individuals for credible fear interviews (CFIs). Receiving a positive decision in the CFI is the first step towards safety for these detainees.

Who can help:
• Attorneys with prior experience preparing asylum seekers for their credible fear interviews who can travel to the Denver Contract Detention Facility to conduct in-person preparations.

Volunteers fluent in certain languages preferred but not required: Spanish, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali, Mandarin, Nepali, Uzbek, Urdu, Tamil, Sinhala, Swahili, Lingala, Georgian, Portuguese, French, Russian, Tigrinya, Arabic, and Vietnamese

Lawyers may be barred in any U.S. state.

*Remote and in-person interpretation assistance is also needed in the above languages - to volunteer as an interpreter, please see the accompanying Project posting "Urgent Call: Interpreters Needed to Serve Over 400 new Detainees"
