Conduct State-Level Legislative Research on Domestic Violence

With your help we can update our National Survivor Financial Security Policy Map and Scorecard.

Posted July 8, 2022

Background & Context

About:

FreeFrom is on a mission to create pathways to financial security and long-term safety for survivors of domestic violence so they can thrive and live free from abuse. One of our approaches to this work is promoting the passage of policies across the U.S. that support survivors in building financial security.

Last year we launched our National Survivor Financial Security Policy Map and Scorecard (https://mapandscorecard.freefrom.org/).

This interactive first-of-its-kind tech tool provides accessible information to users about how each state does (or does not) currently support survivors in building financial security, how each state can improve, and quick and easy ways for users to get involved in the policy advocacy process.

Our goals for the Map and Scorecard are to 1) advance survivor financial security centered policies in every state and 2) engage and empower survivors to actively participate in the policy-making process.

Project Description:

This project will consist of research to find state-level legislation in all 50 states + DC related to survivor financial security that has been introduced in the last two years; 2021 or 2022.

We estimate research for each state to take about 1-3 hours. Volunteers can choose how many states they would like to take on.

With your legal research support, you will help us to stay as up-to-date on current legislation and ahead of any potential changes needed for the Map and Scorecard.

This means that our National Survivor Financial Security Policy Map and Scorecard will continue to make unprecedented strides in advancing policies to support survivors across the country while simultaneously (and for the first time ever) engaging survivors and advocates in the policy-making process!

Immediate Problem

Survivors are kept out of the policy making process. In order to ensure systems and policies are survivor-centered, survivors must be at the forefront of policy advocacy and decision making.

Work & Deliverables

Volunteers will complete research for assigned state(s) based on a very detailed research guide and template.
