Help Journalists by Updating a Legal Treatise on Court Access

Posted November 13, 2018

This is a critical time for press freedoms. Help the Reporters Committee support journalists and media lawyers by updating a chapter of its Open Courts Compendium, an important online resource on the law of access to court proceedings and records in all 50 states and 12 federal circuit courts of appeals. The chapters that need to be updated focus on the following jurisdictions: Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and the 1st, 3d, 4th, 6th, and 8th-10th Circuit Courts of Appeals. Being licensed in a jurisdiction is helpful, but not required.

Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press

The Reporters Committee is a nonpartisan nonprofit. It was founded by leading journalists and media lawyers in 1970, when the nation’s news media faced an unprecedented wave of government subpoenas forcing reporters to name confidential sources. Today, its attorneys provide pro bono legal representation, amicus curiae support, and other legal resources to protect First Amendment freedoms and the newsgathering rights of journalists.
