California Competes, Project of Community Partners
Creating a new 501c3 for a California organization
This will allow us to be an independent nonprofit organization and further our mission.
Posted November 19, 2021
Background & Context
California Competes: Higher Education for a Strong Economy aims to solve the state’s thorny social and economic problems by conducting rigorous higher education and workforce policy research. Through our research, we guide decision makers in developing and implementing policies that bolster equity so every Californian can engage, contribute, and succeed.
We envision a California where our state and regional economies and communities thrive, fueled by equitable and racially just postsecondary and workforce outcomes.
Our diverse staff brings decades of experience in higher education and public policy. We work statewide and travel across the country to research and advocate for a higher education system that provides opportunities for all Californians.
Immediate Problem
We are currently a fiscally sponsored project and roughly 10% of all of our revenue goes to the fiscal sponsor to manage our back-office operations. We are ready to become our own nonprofit and need legal assistance in completing the appropriate paperwork and setting up the organization's bylaws. Setting up our own nonprofit will allow us to keep more of the revenue that we raise via grants, and allow us more autonomy in hiring, benefits, financial management, etc.
Work & Deliverables
Review the forms we need to file with the state of california and the IRS to becoming a stand alone nonprofit (articles of incorporation with state of CA, Form 1023 with IRS, etc) as well as assist in drafting our organization bylaws.
Preparation Phase
- Intro call to talk through the process and what steps we need the most help on.
Collaboration Phase
- The vollunteer would review the forms we fill out and provide guidance on setting up bylaws.
