(Remote) Help Asylum-Seekers Obtain Release from Immigration Detention
Reunite immigrant families with loved ones to pursue their cases outside of detention
Posted October 20, 2021
Background & Context
RMIAN has an urgent need for volunteers to represent individuals detained at the Aurora immigration detention center in bond proceedings. This is an opportunity for discrete, limited representation, that can have a huge impact on an individual's case. Studies have found that individuals with representation are far more likely to be granted relief, including bond. If released, individuals have greater access to counsel, as well as a better ability to gather evidence and prepare their case. A sample case in need of representation is below. The Aurora court allows for telephonic appearances, so all bond cases can be handled remotely.
Work & Deliverables
Mr. BG is a 36-year-old man from Nicaragua who recently arrived in the United States. Mr. BG is afraid to return to Nicaragua because he is against the government and paramilitaries came to his house searching for him. He also experiences an array of health conditions, including cardiac issues and respiration problems. Mr. BG has a half-sister and friend in Miami, either of whom may be able to serve as his sponsor. Mr. BG is eligible to apply for asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under the Convention against Torture. He seeks an attorney to represent him on a bond case so that he may pursue his asylum application from outside of detention. He seeks an attorney to advocate on his behalf.
