Reunite immigrant families with loved ones to pursue their cases outside of detention
Posted June 28, 2021
Background & Context
RMIAN has an urgent need for volunteers to represent individuals detained at the Aurora immigration detention center in bond proceedings. This is especially urgent and compelling given the COVID-19 pandemic. A sample case in need of representation is below. The Aurora court currently has a standing order in place allowing for telephonic appearances, so all bond cases can be handled remotely.
Work & Deliverables
Mr. BU is a 29-year-old man from Ghana who recently arrived in the United States. Mr. BU is bisexual and fears return to Ghana due to his sexuality. Mr. BU was beaten and hospitalized multiple times after attacks based on his sexual orientation. Mr. BU passed his credible fear interview and is eligible to apply for asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under the Convention against Torture. He seeks an attorney to represent him on a bond case so that he may pursue his asylum application from outside of detention. He seeks an attorney to advocate on his behalf.
