Help Defend Strong Civics and Social Studies Education in Texas
Inform options to respond to threats to social studies delivery by HB 3979/SB 2202 in Texas

Work & Deliverables
SB 2202/HB 3979 have each passed Texas chambers (some differences between bills but minor). They appear to bar schools from engaging in any kind of public policy practicums, or working with partners that do policy or lobbying work (or engage students in this). They also limit discussion of certain current events, and examination of structural racism. Generation Citizen has worked with over 21 schools in the Central Texas area in the last 4 years delivering a project and action based civics curriculum, and is currently revising that curriculum to have a deeper focus on equity and racism. We would greatly appreciate a consult on our current options for working with schools if this bill is signed in to law, and implications for our work in the upcoming school year.
Generation Citizen
Generation Citizen is transforming how civics education is taught by bringing the subject to life. We champion real-world democracy education that equips all young people with the skills and knowledge needed to effect change. To ensure that our democracy represents the voices of all people, we prioritize working with students from communities that have been historically excluded from the political process. In the classroom, our Action Civics program inspires robust civic participation by inviting students to engage directly with the local issues and institutions impacting their communities. We provide thought leadership, conduct research, and build coalitions to advocate for state and district level policies that ensure schools prioritize Action Civics. Nationwide, Generation Citizen is activating a movement of young people prepared to lead in our democracy. Generation Citizen is nearing our 10th year of operations, serving more than 60,000 students since our founding
